Check out this FB Live video in the #OCTFME studio for an episode of
@TheSanctuaryRadioShow where I am talking to Dr. Jasmine Abrams, an international behavioral research scientist.
In this episode, Dr. Jasmine talk about the myth of the Strong Black Woman + the range of biological, social, psychological, and cultural factors that contribute to Black women’s health. Her research paper, Reducing Disparities and Achieving Equity in African American Women’s Health, shares more information on how trauma and stress can lead to a suppressed immune system, therefore making the body ripe for disease.
👩🏽🦱FACT: Despite our “ageless” appearance, middle-aged African American women are found to be nearly 8 years biologically older than White women (Geronimus et al., 2010).
🚫FACT: This finding appears to be related to biological alterations caused by environmental exposure to stress and trauma over the life course (McEwen, Eiland, Hunter, & Miller, 2012).
This episode will air soon, online at DC Radio , 96.3 HD-4, and DCRadio.gov and On Demand everywhere!
