Here are a few of the tracks and the meaning behind them:
“A Brand New Day” from The Wiz (Original Broadway Cast Recording) At six-years-old, hearing this song was the first time I realized that music could affect my emotions. (Note: Since the original is unavailable on Spotify, I am using the Diana Ross version)
“Peg”
by Steely Dan
Since our ’72 Chevy only had an AM radio, I came to love 70s Soft Rock.
“Momma” by Kendrick Lamar
This song that was the soundtrack to my two trips to Africa (Cameroon & Kemet). It was as if my ancestors were saying, “We’ve been waiting for you!”
“Still Waters” by The Four Tops
The haunting song that was playing on the car radio when I was en route to my grandfather’s funeral in 1982.
“Is This the End” by New Edition
At 13-years-old this was the first song that I’d ever ‘slow-dragged’ with a boy. I can still feel the kaleidoscope of butterflies dancing along in my belly.
